Mount Batur Bali

Mount  Batur (Gunung Batur)  is an active volcano in bali and the secred mountain according to hindu believe. It is located in Kintamani district, Bangli regency, Bali, Indonesia. It is 1,717m (5635 ft) high,  the upper cone is only 700m (2275 ft) above the level of the lake and can be climbed and descended in a few hours.

The first documented eruption of batur was in 1804, and it has been frequently active since then,  most the vastating occurred on the 2nd of august and ending on 21st september 1926. Started from 1804 to 2000  mount batur has erupted 26 times.

A lokal cartel actively discourages independent trakkers by not alowing people to hike alone, so you will need to hire a licensed giude. ‘official’ fees for giudes are high, but much cheaper deals can be negotiated at some of the travel agencies in bali who are providing tour services.

The strange landscape is punctuated with hillocks and a series of craters with jets of white hot steam puffing out of small holes. On clear day, you will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the lake batur, Mount Abang, Mount Agung, the distant sea, Mount Rinjani in lombok island and a beautiful sunrise.

The surface is loose and sandy here, and at the top there’s a warm crust of ground, so becareful where you tread. Ask your guide to prepare a meal of baked bananas and hard-boiled eggs cooked to perfection in the natural heat belching from the belly of the volcano  ( you may need to ask them in advance to do this).

If you plan to climb batur vulcano leave as early as posible to avoid the midday heat (you may prefer to do the sundrise  trek, which beginds araound 4 am) wear good walking shoes, bring jacket, sunscreen and bottled water. Batur and the kintamani area are located about 30 km (18 miles) from ubud, so this tour could follow on from the ubud highlights trip and bangli tour route.
